Storegate is a Swedish cloud storage and digital signing service founded in 2003 that operates entirely within Sweden under Swedish jurisdiction. The company positions itself as a sovereign alternative to Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive for organizations that need to keep data outside the reach of US extraterritorial laws like the CLOUD Act.
The platform offers file sharing with strong identity verification via BankID and Freja eID, cloud storage with AES-256 encryption, eIDAS-compliant digital signatures, version control, granular access permissions, and team collaboration. Data is automatically replicated across physically separate Swedish datacenters. The service explicitly refuses to scan user content, sell data, or use stored files for AI training.
Storegate is one of only two providers approved by eSamverkansprogrammet (eSam) as a qualified secure-storage partner for Swedish municipalities and regions, a credential that makes it a default choice for public-sector, healthcare, and regulated enterprise buyers. Why choose Storegate over Dropbox?
The decisive argument is data jurisdiction. Dropbox is headquartered in the United States, which means personal data processed through it can be subject to non-EU legal regimes: the US CLOUD Act, FISA 702, or similar laws depending on the provider.
