About Snapkin

Snapkin is a calorie and protein tracker that logs a meal from a single photo of your plate, with no food scale, barcode scanning or database searching. When it is unsure about a portion it asks one follow-up question about whatever would change the number most, and it shows the assumptions it made so you can correct them.

The app runs on iPhone and Android in ten languages and works offline, uploading meals once you reconnect. Snapkin carries no ads and no analytics, and says your photos and diary are never sold or used to train AI. There is no free version: the monthly plan costs 9.99 euros after a three-day trial, and the yearly plan is paid up front.

Key benefits:

  • Photo logging that estimates calories, macros and portion sizes from one picture
  • Follow-up questions only when a detail would change the estimate
  • Protein-first tracking against a daily target, alongside weight tracking
  • Meal ideas from your remaining budget, your fridge or a menu
  • Lock Screen widgets and watch support on Apple Watch and Wear OS
  • No ads or analytics, and account deletion directly in the app

Snapkin is built and run by Robot Studios IT Consultancy BV, a Belgian private limited company registered in Berlaar, Belgium, and founded by developer Mattias Geniar. Your account, diary and photos are stored on a DigitalOcean server in Amsterdam. The meal analysis itself runs in the United States: requests go through OpenRouter to a Google model, OpenAI models handle habit learning and dish matching, and Cloudflare, a US company, handles traffic, email and encrypted backups.

Why choose Snapkin over Cal AI?

The decisive argument is data jurisdiction. Cal AI is headquartered in the United States, which means personal data processed through it can be subject to non-EU legal regimes: the US CLOUD Act, FISA 702, or similar laws depending on the provider. After the 2020 Schrems II ruling, EU organisations must carry out a transfer impact assessment for every such data flow.

Snapkin removes that overhead. As a Belgium-based provider, it operates under EU GDPR, and data stays inside the EU/EEA by default. For regulated sectors such as health, public administration, and finance, that's not a nice-to-have but a requirement. For everyone else, it's concentration-risk insurance: you avoid depending on a single jurisdiction that can change the rules without warning.
